We designed this 3,100 square foot for ourselves at a construction cost of $320,000 (year 1996 dollars). During the construction we were asked what style our new home would be. Builders and realtors hang "colonial" on every house, regardless of true style so frequently our answer was "anti-colonial" because we wanted to indicate something unique but suiting our life style.

We spend much of our leisure time hiking Vermont's Green Mountains, New Hampshire's Whites and New York's Adirondaks and we wanted to have an "adirondak lodge". Our objection to the builders' colonial house is the design of a big box filled with smaller boxes called rooms. We wanted open, airy, fun and sun filled spaces. Although we considered pealed logs for structural elements to allow open spaces, we wanted to create a more refined lodge and chose more finished columns and beams, but included a large floor to ceiling fieldstone fireplace.

This project demonstrates three ADM beliefs:
  1. Our belief that there is a lot more to living than a "mock" colonial.
  2. Our belief that homes should be about the homeowner, not what the market has conveniently available.
  3. Our belief that if you are going to spend a lot on your new home, why not have something that fits you and your lifestyle?
